Lupus
What is Lupus?
Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that, for unknown reasons, causes inflammation and tissue damage to virtually any of the body's own cells, tissue, and organs - especially the skin, joints, blood, heart, lungs, kidneys, and brain.
I had a two-fold mission in mind when I began writing Joy Comes in the Mourning: to raise awareness of a real and serious chronic autoimmune disease – Lupus; and to encourage readers that God has purpose behind, presence during, and preservation after every storm that may come their way.
Although according to the Lupus Foundation of America (LFA), more than 1.5 million Americans have some form of lupus, I had no knowledge of the potentially disabling and life-altering disease before my diagnosis in 2005. After experiencing first-hand the diseases ravishing health effects, I knew that I had to do something. I am most passionate about my faith, reading, and writing, so when the LFA asked the lupus community to join them in bringing additional attention to the disease, I knew I would write a book.
While a work of fiction, Joy Comes in the Mourning attempts to put a human face on “the disease with a thousand faces.” It deals with real struggles and challenges in the daily life of a lupus survivor.
